My attempt at saving the LZ cutting failed because I didn't make cambium contact. So in another (possibly final) attempt, I made a deep slice into the wood, this time exposing the cambium, and sliced a wedge out of the root stock and inserted into the cutting and wrapped it up with string (all I had on hand).
