Pruning?

Today I clipped off the top tip of Glenn. I am hoping to encourage branching.

Tie strapped in the posts

Plastic ties to strap the base of the posts down to the bottom of the container.
Julie will be the last one to be modified. I am waiting on 1/2" bulkheads to add a drain to all the containers. I also ordered Ph strip testers and air-stones.

Temp pot for Glenn & Carrie, update on Julie.

Temporarily sharing a pot for a week till they recover from the shipping.
Julie continues to grow.

New arrivals! Glenn & Carrie.

Carrie & Glenn arrived June 25th. Bare-root and healthy.
Both Carrie and Glenn's tap-roots were bent and started circling the pot.
Glenn's tap-root wasn't as severe.
How fun.

I also bought $9 worth of brown spray paint to paint the PVC posts I'm gonna put in the pots. I can't help wanting my planters to be more ascetically appealing.

Adding a PVC support rods for the containers.

A picture of the Maxi-jet pump attached below the container.
PVC pipes glued together to create support stakes.
I plan to use plastic ties to strap it to the bottom.
Hmmm.
I plan to spray paint the pipes brown.

Julie Mango June 24th.

Julie's growth is taking off.

Julie Update

New leaves are forming.
All that junk in the background.
Julie has now been transplanted into the new hydroponic container. I wasn't sure if I should put an airstone inside the reservoir, I read that, with the pump running 24/7, there should be enough oxygen pulled down towards the bottom. I have to keep an eye on Julie to make sure it doesn't wilt and die. I gave it some seaweed nutrient and a little bit of citric acid to increase the Ph. I added a vitamin C tablet into the reservoir to hopefully clear out the chloramines.
Joy.

Hydroponic containers kind of finished.

Float valve attached.

I forgot to take a picture of the maxi-jet pump 900, that I attached at the bottom. Drilled a hole for the 1/4" tube for the drip irrigation.

These guys are heavier than I thought they would be. I guess it will be strength test when I have to move them indoors for winter.
I added a water level using a blue transparent 1/2" tube (cut to 7 inches), 13mm rubber grommet and 1/2" barbed elbow.

Three more hydroponic containers

Well.

My attempt at a hydroponic container for my mangoes.

Three legs, made from the atrium gate screen and coupling.
Chopped off top of container using my Multi-Master Fein powertool. Which was cool.
Cut off the handles.
Drilled 3, 3 inch holes on the bottom of a Rubbermaid Roughneck container.
4" Atrium Gate strapped to 4.5" pipe coupling. Then tied it to the container.
All from Home Depot.

Update on Julie.

Wow wee, new buds.

Repotted again.

My poor mango.
I decided to remove the pump and air-stone from the bottom of the pot. I figured that if I wanted to go hydroponically, I would build a special tank for it rather than try to pump water from the bottom of the container. I think the roots look okay but I'm not a very good judge. After repotting I gave it some kelp nutrients I got for free (what fortune) from Santa Cruz Hydroponics (http://www.schydroponics.com/). I couldn't believe this place was just down the street from me. And to think all this time I had been driving to the city or ordering online for my stuff. golly. I also bought 50 litres of LECA. Maybe I bought too much.
