I pruned VP in the hopes of balancing out its shape.

I took a drill bit and drilled out the apical meristem to encourage branching.

Office mangoes.

Lemon Zest & Maha Chanok.
Its hard to see, LZ's little shoots are growing. MC's new growth is shriveling up. I had suspected that the new growth were premature. At least the stem is still green, plus I've been spraying KLN rooting hormone everyday on MC's leaves. Once I feel the roots are established, I'll have to prune MC down by half.
I didn't take photos of my other mangoes but Edward, Carrie, Glenn are pushing out new buds. Pickering seems ready to flush but not quite sure yet if it is or not.
Julie #1 is still flowering and its driving me crazy. I cut off all the flowers today in the hopes that it will stop it and put that energy into leaves.
I am thinking of one day grafting MC onto one of my Tebows.
I was surprised to discover that two of my LZ grafts onto young seedlings seem to have worked. The others grafts shriveled up and turned brown but two of my experiments. Will take pics soon.
My Sweetheart Lychee is producing new growth but its still kind of chlorotic.

Maha Chanok; two weeks! Plus LZ.

LZ & MC.

Maha Chanok survived to 14 days.
Two weeks is good I think.

Merci beaucoup.

Maha Chanok; day 12.

Maha Chanok
Well, I found an area of deadwood, so I carefully scrapped away the black parts. I hope it will heal over now. It looked like some sort of trauma it got when it was younger?
New growth.
The top is starting to bud.
et voilá.

Maha Chanok update; Day 9.

Today, I noticed that MC is pushing out new growth. I am hoping this means that its roots are now working. Sorry if the pics blurry.
Side branch pushing growth.
Nothing at the top yet.

Update, July 17th, 2012.

Lemon Zest

Julie #1
starting new growth… I hope they're not more flowers.

Julie #4
Its flush of growth is starting to harden off. Now the plant is lop-sided though.

Group Shot.

Valencia Pride
Speaking of lop-sided, I need to prune VP's wayward lower branch back so that it balances out a bit with the rest of the tree.
et voilá.

Oh, and Maha Chanok is still looking green and perhaps showing signs of new shoots. Will update on him later.

Maha Chanok; day 6.

More leaves have dropped. Down to five. Sorry for the horrible photo.
This is the "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree" stage.
If it survives two weeks, it should be able to make it.

Maha Chanok; Day 5

Day 5, and its down to 8 leaves. I am wondering if it will lose all its leaves or hold on to a couple? Fortunately, the stem is still green.

Maha Chanok; Day 4.

My maha chanok has this number written on one of its leaves: "2147047"
Its Day 4 and MC has dropped a few leaves but its still green. I took the bag off just for the photo.
Voilá.

New digs and grafting galore.

Pictures of my mango trees (and lychee) in the corner of my office.
Lemon Zest and Tebows (Youngs) in a nook.

So... after pruning Lemon Zest, I took the cutting and grafted all my seedling and Manila with it. I hope that at least one will take.
This Kent seedling (below) I tried Chip bud grafting. It will be an interesting experiment to see if it works.
Manila with three scions grafted…
… and a shield bud graft (although I think I botched this one?).

Pruned Lemon Zest

So, today I decided to cut Lemon Zest in half. I noticed that buds were starting to push out from the trunk and thought this would be the time to prune it down and start its path towards bonsai-dom.
View of the cut.
I placed the chopped half into a vase of water. I will try to graft using parts from this piece, later on.
I noticed this when I first got the tree. It had the same problem as my dead Orange Sherbet. Part of the bark is dead; probably from sun-scald or frost damage when it was younger. Causing this crack to open up. I cleaned it a bit with a sharp knife and hope it will heal over.
Hmmm.

Maha Chanok is in the house!

I can't believe it! I got a letter that my mango got rejected by the USDA; I was so bummed. Then a package arrived a few minutes later and voila! It was my Maha Chanok!! I was suddenly overjoyed. I'm totally guessing that they made a one time exception. Cool!
Here it is in my new office. Wrapped in newspaper and plastic.
Here it is before I removed the wet towel around the roots.
I was surprised to discover that it is an approach graft.
View without the grafting tape. It doest look strong but I guess it works.
Because the root ball was so small I potted it up in a 2 gallon smart pot. Gave it some seaweed, myco and azo.
I bagged it up to keep the humidity and moisture level high around the plant. I'll try to spray it later with  some KLN rooting hormone.
